About Johan
Dr. Johan van der Merwe is a highly experienced general surgeon based at Cape Town Mediclinic, CPPAE Town. He completed his MBChB at the University of Pretoria in 1990 and served in the South African National Defence Force from 1993 to 2000. Dr. van der Merwe specialized in General Surgery at Pretoria University, earning his M.Med degree in 2006.
He spent 15 years practicing as a general surgeon at Mediclinic Vereeniging before relocating to Cape Town in March 2023. With a career spanning over two decades, Dr. van der Merwe has developed expertise across the full spectrum of general surgery, including hernia repairs, gallbladder and abdominal surgeries, appendectomies, breast and thyroid procedures, as well as skin and soft tissue conditions.
Dr. van der Merwe has a particular interest in gastroenterology and has been running an endoscopy clinic since 2007, performing over 16,000 endoscopic procedures to date. He has also pursued advanced training internationally, including courses in France on endoscopic polyp removal, advanced laparoscopic abdominal procedures, and bariatric surgery. His M.Med research focused on diabetic foot complications, reflecting his commitment to evidence-based care and improving patient outcomes.
Beyond medicine, Dr. van der Merwe cherishes family life. He has been happily married to his wife Karin for 29 years, and together they have four children, two of whom are married, and two beloved granddaughters.
